Adjustable dumbbells are not the most convenient dumbbells, but they are cost-effective and space-saving. So unless you have the space and the money, go with adjustable. I work out at home alone, so I'm not really sharing, but I definitely agree with Rosco above. I'd rather have a nice set of hex dumbbells.

I agree with the 1st comment if the dumbbells are used in a commercial gym. However, no sane gym owner would ever use adjustable dumbbells for the very reason the commenter state. Plus adjustavle dumbbells are no way near as sturdy as standard dumbbells, they would'nt last more than a few months in a commercial gym.
Now for the home userm they are perfect. I've had mine over 6 months and best peice of kit I've bough in years.

Don't get the adjustable dumbbells! I've seen people make this mistake all the time. What you don't realize is that you cannot SHARE the weights. With conventional dumbbells, two or more people can use the weights at the same time (granted not the same exact weights). Try working out with someone using adjustable weights...you can't! Also, it is more work to adjust weights - as opposed to just setting down one amount and picking up another. Finally, I like to personally set up weights in advance for different excercises (one set of dumbbells for my shoulders over here, and another set of dumbbells for my back over there). With adjustable weights you cannot do that either. I guess space is the only real reason for getting the adjustable weights.
